SSD (Solid State Drive)
Solid State Drives (SSD) exist now. As people everywhere convert from the old noisy mechanical drives to the new solid state drives, some ask "Why?"
Advantages of converting to a solid state drive include (but not limited to)...
- Small size (U.S.B. plug-ins fit in your pockets, camera cards fit in your pockets).
- Very light (no mechanical motors).
- No noise. Normal hard disk drives make a lot of noise and eventually wear out. 100% silent!
- Many hold life expectancies well over 5 years. As one of the first companies to buy a USB Flash drive we learned quickly the value of these drives. We put our SSD through the washer (not on purpose) and the dryer multiple times and never lost any information and the drive continues to work until this day (October, 2008). It is now over five (5) years old.
- Flash memory sticks commonly get defined as SSD (solid state drives). A whole new line of products entered the markets this year (2008) and these new products now spell the end of the mechanical disk drive, and possibly the end of DVD drives.
- Flash memory drives cost little to produce so you get very nice prices.
- Some types currently out-perform mechanical disk drives in both reading and writing. Banks and other companies bought large models as disk drives in the past (very expensive). The SATA (Serial ATA) interface promises the demise of all mechanical disk drives. Who needs a slow DVD writer (8GB maximum data) when 128 GB SSD exist?
- Sellers indicate, "SSD's do not need to be defragmented. Doing so may lower the lifespan." Accessing data in any memory location occurs as quick as accessing data in any other memory location so this indicates defragmentation woes disappear!

NOTE Solid State Disk Drive ends up as a misconglobulation of an acronym. It exists though. We define memory cards that get inserted into "card readers" as solid state disks. We define the card reader as a solid state disk drive. Does it drive though? Certainly, it drives electrons through and around itself! So now you know the truth. We prefer solid state diskless drive as opposed to solid state disk drive because most memory cards end up as squares and not circular in nature.
Some common solid state drive manufacturers include...

Many computers provide multiple ports. Some ports end up as Version 1.1 only. Some ports end up as USB Version 2.0. Check the version of the port you hook the device up to! IF your computer possesses different version ports, test it yourself and notice the difference.
USB Version 1.0 exists on some older computers (pre-2002). These computers probably run Windows 98, Windows NT4 or perhaps even earlier. USB Version 1.0 and USB Version 1.1 mean pretty much the same thing according to the information here (click to read).
USB Version 3 recently came out and research on this just started.

Some complain about slowness. Some indicate these perform reasonably well. Some do NOT know that four different versions of USB ports exists. You can hook a USB 2 device up to a USB 1.1 port and the device WORKS. When a USB 2 device gets hooked up to a USB 2 port it performs alot faster than when it gets hooked up to a USB 1.1 port.
