Soil: A Plants Best Friend

The soil started out as sand. Some 40 pound bags of dirt from Walmart and Home Depot were added. In 2004, we successfully grew corn, squash, a Congo watermelon vine (killed by a hurricane passing through), sunflowers, tomatoes, cucumbers and some peas and beans. Peas and beans both seem to require many seeds to make it worth while. We keep planting these though because they provide nitrogen to the soil.

Basil And Lemon Balm

We achieved success with basil and lemon balm although the lemon balm died over the summer of 2005. We think the cucumbers planted next to the lemon balm might have done the lemon balm plant in. In 2006, we planted nasturtium where the cucumbers once grew and the nasturtium grows very well there, in the shade of a very nice avocado tree.

The Avocado Tree

The avocado produced nothing in 2004. However, I noticed something special about the avocado tree at that time. The buds dropping from the avocado tree, along with the leaves from the jacoranda trees, turn into wonderful soil, whereby it seems like anything at all thrives in such a soil. I took the leaves and the buds from the gutters and noticed trees growing in the gutters. The trees in the gutters raised a flag in my mind and after that, the avocado tree and the jacoranda tree droppings turned to gold! And in 2005, the avocado tree produced perhaps a 60 really nice avocado. I turned the avocado fruit into some really outstanding guacamole! It aids in digestion and blood glucose control as well.

As of January 2006, various belle, serrano and jalapeno peppers grow not far from each other and we watch the different types peppers growing on each plant. We notice they sometimes cross polinate, and while the belle peppers tend to create funny shaped belle peppers, still sweet, the jalapeno pepper plants produce over sized sweet jalapenos. A serrano pepper plant growing in with a cherry tomato plant make nice companion plants. They really seem enjoy to enjoy each other's company and the fruit produced seem to benefit as well, with greater numbers of tomatoes produced as well as greater numbers of peppers.

We started off with hungarian wax peppers and those continue to thrive in a few pots. These peppers, yellow in color, nice and spicey, however, not quite as hot as the serrano peppers, tend to grow well all year long. The seeds from these peppers easily germinate and produce more hungarian wax pepper plants.
